ZOE (2021)

This work follows a collaboration between Cleary & Erskine on location in Iceland during the summer of 2019. This is the second time both artists have worked together, based on a shared interest in performance, ritual, rites of passage and responses to selected sites. For this project, Erskine contributed a long-term motif within her own practice, of wrapping the form to explore outer and inner worlds. To this Cleary added a new array of objects of divination, inspired by research into older Icelandic and Nordic belief systems. The work on location was made through intuitive responses to the incredible natural environment of Iceland as a prompt and a platform. The artists travelled out into the land over several weeks, working with both natural and found objects also gathered during the journey. In the post-production stage of the series presented here, Cleary has responded to this source material to further explore her ongoing interest in visual generative myth-making, new technologies, Neo-paganism and magical realism.
