Artist In Schools (2014-16)
Under Construction
Tubber National School (2015)
For this project the children researched different aspects of local history, folklore and the natural environment surrounding the school. Students in the junior classes developed characters based on observations of animals on their journeys to and from the school building. Storytelling and improvisation were used to create a stop motion animation and a children’s storybook. For the more senior classes, animations were compiled into a short film narrating chosen stories of place and local history. Outcomes were featured by Cathy Halloran in the children’s programme RTE News2Today.
Feakle National School (2015)
Students in Feakle NS chose to work with local legends, including Biddy Early & her magic blue bottle, and of course the story of the giant who gave the village its name. The school hall, which is also an important space for local community events was the site of choice for a large painting designed and painted by the children.
Inagh National School (2014)
For this project children in all classes children worked on the walls of an inner courtyard which was turned into a school garden. The design process started with each classroom researching different insects, birds, sea creatures and mammals from the local habitat, both present and historic. All drawings were then digitally compiled into a series of design options that the whole school voted on. The selected design was transferred to the inner courtyard and painted by the children over a period of several weeks.
Corofin National School (2016)
Students in Corofin designed both a wall mural for the school yard and a stone flower garden at the front of the school. Their work was officially opened by local MEP Deirdre Clune.
